When the pub first opened in 1782, if the tide was low, ships travelling along the Severn from Bristol to Gloucester would stop at Arlingham and the sailors would walk up to the village, have a few drinks in the Red Lion and then head upstairs, hang their hammocks in the rafters and stay in the pub for the night.

These days we don’t see too many sailors, and the accommodation is much more comfortable, but we are delighted to be able to welcome overnight guests back to Arlingham at The Red Lion.

Come and stay in one of our recently refurbished rooms, enjoy our warm hospitality and great food. Just maybe don’t drink as much as the Sailors used to!
